JUNIOR YOUNG FRIENDS CAMP 16-21 JULY 2013

Eight JYFs brought enthusiasm, insights and camaraderie to The Settlement for 6 days.  Quaker Acres residents were privileged to be able to interact with these young people who very quickly became a “group” caring for and listening to each other.  Activities included, holding a Meeting for Worship for Business, roller skating, insights and history through the Quaker Tapestry photographs, hiking, cleaning duties, swimming, Quaker testimonies expressed in art and inspired by the Tapestries, attending morning Meeting for Worship, team building when working with horses, a values auction and a working bee in The Settlement grounds. Captions to photos (except one in brackets) were extracted from the Epistle written by the JYFs.

On day one everyone was introduced, we learnt about the history of the settlement- the place we were to spend the next 5 days – and formed and agreed on loose ground rules.

2

On the second day, we explored Quaker tapestry and enjoyed a variety of delights provided by Wanganui town centre.

On the third day we hiked through Bushy Park, followed by a trip to Kai Iwi beach, finishing with a life auction, in which, with limited funds we were asked to bid on the value(s) which were most important to us.

4

On the fourth day we did a blindfolded team building activity with horses,
developing trust and friendship.
 5
With this activity we learnt about the choice between love and fear,
and how we use each to achieve our goals.

6

Later we learnt about both ourselves and others, with a quote based art activity, painted onto jigsaw pieces which we then fitted together.

Overall this was a fantastic experience; we have forged friendships in 5 days that we will treasure forever. We have leant so much about trust, exploration, values, ice-cream and peas.

We would love to thank David and Louise Tinsley and Liz and Ton Remmerswaal’s hard work, without which this incredible camp couldn’t have taken place.

As well as this, our fantastic YF – Laura Edith Hadfield, who gave up a week of her holiday,

sleep and digits to come help out.

Finally we would love to thank Judith Timpany for her scrumptious, delicious and amazing food which has caused us all to become very full (we all gained a few kilos) and extremely happy.
