This is one of a number of copies of this archive originally established by Rene Orchiston of over 60 varieties of harakeke (flax). They are each numbered and named according to a catalogue and laid out so that they can each be accessed.
This collection was established here in 2002 and has generally thrived.
We have been able to share plant material for local marae, our regional museum, weavers and others. We have had a number of group weaving opportunities from within the community, and outside weaving wananga. The walkway/ harakeke collection area is now able to be grazed by sheep to maintain shorter grass.
